In this guide, we'll cover the process of tiling both the front and underside of an archway. Archways are known for their strength and balance, designed to distribute the load evenly to the pillars or stonework on each side. While stone blocks are commonly seen around arches, we're here to show you how to achieve a stunning appearance using standard tiles.
1. Preparing for the perfect curve
Begin by tiling the entrance up to the point where the arch starts on each side. This will help you create a template for cutting those curve-hugging tiles.
2. Measuring the archway
Find the center point of the arched opening and draw a vertical line. Depending on the curvature of your arch, you may have a tile in the center of this line or one on either side of it.
3. Crafting the template
For an exposed edge arch, use plywood to create a template for the curve of the underside tiles. For a hidden edge arch, ensure that your template accounts for the thickness of the tile and adhesive.
4. Shaping the arched tiles
With your template ready, start constructing the archway using symmetrical diamond or rhombus-shaped tiles.
5. Cutting tile to fit the outer face
Mark the tiles on your template, cut them to fit the spaces, and arrange them. Before adhering the tiles, dry lay them around the arch and use tape to hold them in place, ensuring a perfect fit.
6. Aligning the vaulted tiles
Now, let's tackle the underside. If you've measured correctly, the tiles on the underside of the arch should line up nicely with the outward-facing tiles. Start with the vault tiles and work symmetrically toward the center of the arch.
7. Cutting curves for a flawless finish
Mark the curve on the tile that requires cutting, and use an angle grinder to score the front and back. Once the cut is complete, finish the edge with an abrasive stone or file for a polished look.
By following these steps you'll be well on your way to creating a remarkable tiled archway. Remember, practice makes perfect, so take your time and enjoy the process. Good luck, and happy tiling!
