Find the right grout joint width is important to prevent tripping over and breaking the edge of your tile. In this article we'll share our recommended grout widths for every tile category.

Due to tile size and the amount of size variation in the tile, the actual grout joint thickness may vary from what is recommended or specified below.

Wider grout joints will help accommodate placement of tile and keep straight lines. It also reduces the slope in the transition from one tile to the next. Aesthetically, a larger grout joint can highlight the tile, and is often used in traditional tile installations. A smaller grout joint can evoke a more contemporary, modern look.

Grout Width Recommendations:

The width of the grout joint is essential for both aesthetic and structural purposes. We don't recommend setting tile with a grout joint less than 1/16”. Floor and shower installations should consider using larger grout lines for more traction.

Natural Terracotta Tile – 1/4" to 3/4"

Cotto Tile – 1/8” to 3/4”

D'hanis Terracotta Tile – 1/8” to 3/4”

Glazed Terracotta Tile – 1/8” to 3/4”

Glazed Thin Brick – 1/8” to 3/4”

Zellige Tile – 1/16” – 3/8”

Pool Water Tile – 1/8” to 3/4”

Clay Tile (Talavera, Vintage, Patterned Clay Tile) – 1/8” to 3/8”

3D Tile – 1/8” to 3/8”

When it comes to grout width you should keep in mind that the narrower the grout joint, the more apparent the natural variation of the tile will be. Before the tiles are set, the required grout joints should be discussed with the designer/installer. Properly spacing tiles and selecting the correct grouting material will ensure a beautiful tile installation that will last for years.
